Link: iOS 9 Reported to Focus on Stability and Optimization

Good report from the more-reliable-than-most Mark Gurman at 9to5mac on Apple’s plans for this year’s iOS 9.

For 2015, iOS 9 is going to include a collection of under-the-hood improvements. Sources tell us that iOS 9 engineers are putting a “huge” focus on fixing bugs, maintaining stability, and boosting performance for the new operating system, rather than solely focusing on delivering major new feature additions. Apple will also continue to make efforts to keep the size of the OS and updates manageable, especially for the many millions of iOS device owners with 16GB devices.

If it’s true, it’s definitely long overdue. Apple has been firing on all cylinders with iOS over the past several years. These past two versions were ambitious to an unequaled degree, and while this resulted in a complete top-down UI replacement and unprecedented inter-app communication and extension system, stability has taken a back seat.

I don’t count myself among those who think Apple’s best days are behind it. Indeed, I don’t believe they’ve gotten nearly enough credit for the work they’ve done with iOS 7 and iOS 8. What we need was a little course correction; a little more focus on polish. Hopefully that’s what we’re getting.
