Newbie

Hi guys, I'm looking at getting into iOS gaming with a MFi but would like your advice. For now I'll be sticking to my iPhone 6 for cost purposes.

As far as I can tell my best options are...

-Steelseries Nimbus with a Nyko clip
-Madcatz C.T.R.L.i

My main worry is the viewing angle (i'll be playing on the train) so at the moment I'm leaning towards the Nimbus with a clip. 2nd worry is the iOS compatibility, I'm reading various things about games not supporting various controllers anymore etc etc. 3rd worry is Bluetooth, does this not rinse you battery life?

Thanks in advanced, any other tips or recommendations are more than welcome.

I don't have any experience with the Nimbus w/ clip, but I would suggest switching the C.T.R.L.i with the PXN Speedy.
1. It's viewing angles are pretty good but nothing revolutionary.
2. I don't know what games would do this, but if I had to guess it would be because they are dropping iCade controllers (MFi is the new standard). Could you provide some links/games where you saw this.
3. Yes, Bluetooth will draw some battery life (as does anything), but only a little.
Also, the Nyko clip is much larger than other clips. Keep that in mind if you're a traveler.

Yes forgot about the Speedy, my understanding is that the clip viewing angle on both goes no further than 45 degrees, which could be a killer for me holding it upright o the train.

Hey,

The viewing angle on the Speedy and the C.T.R.L.i are about the same, and both are too steep for my tastes. The Nimbus+clip goes all the way back, which is what I prefer - I'm much happier using it, even though it blocks the pause button.

As for compatibility, games will (very rarely) drop MFi support, usually due to a bug. In practice, this isn't an issue - well over 99% of games that gained MFi support at some point still have support.

As for Bluetooth, it doesn't impact battery life much, no. All iOS devices have dedicated Bluetooth chips for managing connections, and these chips use very little power. Modern iOS devices assume Bluetooth is always on, for Airdrop, Apple Watch, Handoff, etc.

Cheers guys,

Just tried to buy the Nyko Xbox clip but it isn't sold in the UK.

I think I'll hold fire until a controller clip that can go flat or beyond 45 degrees comes out. Shame.

Might be worth considering the Gamevice for iPhone then. It isn't my favorite controller, but it's a perfect viewing angle.

I did consider gamevice, biggest issue for me is the analogue sticks, if I'm going the get a controller then they need to spot on otherwise what's the point. And I'm not willing to compromise for that amount of money, £30 and I might have taken a punt.
