#1 iOS Games » Pac-Man C.E. DX appreciation thread » Aug 31 10:47 PM

I didn't see a dedicated thread for this game, which seems a shame since it may be the best excuse for an MFi controller yet on account of Namco making it unavailable with physical controls on contemporary hardware (there's a Playstation Mini of the non-DX version of Championship Edition, but it isn't available on the Vita store for some reason). It plays as well as it looks (like an absolute dream), especially if you've done your homework and are playing on a controller with a quality d-pad. Really the only way they could improve the gameplay at this point is to somehow incorporate the multiplayer from Pac-Man Vs (which they should totally do).

tl;dr want to sell someone on the idea of MFi gaming? get an iPad mini, get a Gamevice, get this game, load it up, and hand it to them; the rest should take care of itself.

Don't forget about Secret of Mana, which doubly benefits from hard buttons since it's an ARPG (and also just really great in general). Wish they'd release an iPad version already though!

+1 to Sid Meier's Pirates (my white whale) and NBA Jam. Aside from those my big wish-lister is the new X-Com; one of these days I just know it's gonna get updated. EDIT: And of course five minutes after I post I remember Kero Blaster, which I would definitely love to play with both hard buttons and on the iPad.

#4 Jailbreaking » Moonlight - is it safe to jailbreak just for this? » Aug 31 10:20 PM

Hi all,

So I just discovered the existence of Moonlight, and the idea of being able to play all my Steam games on my Gamevice with its glorious d-pad has me salivating. The iPad I use for gaming is on 8.2, so from what I understand I should be able to jailbreak pretty easily. However, literally earlier today there was a giant news story about 250,000 jailbreakers getting their Apple accounts compromised, which is not exactly a confidence-inspiring turn of events to someone looking into this option.

My question is whether jailbreaking as a whole makes my whole device and all personal info stored on it vulnerable, or if I'll be safe if I only install stuff whose provenance I know for a fact (like the Moonlight Cydia repo). Alternately, if Moonlight's on the verge of an official iOS release, I'll just hold off on jailbreaking.

Thanks!

#5 Re: Jailbreaking » builds.io / iEmulators and MFi » Aug 31 10:09 PM

I can vouch for the GBA, SNES/SMD, and PSP emulators on Builds; the first two work flawlessly, while I only use the PSP emu to play Sid Meier's Pirates with buttons (I've bothered their support team pleading for MFi support to the existing app but sadly the results have been predictable so far). Oddly Pirates plays flawlessly with the Horipad, but it's sluggish with the Gamevice - the only title I can really say that about so far.

One thing to keep in mind with Builds emulators is that the yearly license is per-device. I have a mini retina which lives in my Gamevice now; I'm also going to be getting a larger tablet once they announce the new ones to use as an everyday ereader/for light work tasks/etc - if I want to add emulators to the new tablet (which I do, since I see it as my mobile gaming hub) I have to buy a whole separate license. It's only another $10 per year or so, which I'm happy to spend on app experiences as good as these - just want to let people know in case they're expecting a one-time purchase.

This is a long shot, but does anyone know if there's a way to use the Gamevice to turn pages in Kindle/Instapaper/Goodreader/Reeder/etc.? The Gamevice's form factor is really conducive to reading in bed, and it'd be super convenient to be able to flip pages (ideally using the L/R triggers) or scroll down a page without having to paw at the screen. Anyone know if there's a way to make this happen?

Just want to say that I ended up picking up one of these on the virtue of this review and, while I'll probably be moving my iPad gaming over to a Gamevice once it shows up, this really is an incredible controller. It looks like it's going to be a cheesy piece of crap, but all of the buttons (ESPECIALLY the d-pad) are responsive and feel incredibly tactile, and I've never had any issues with Bluetooth connectivity or anything.

I preordered one as soon as I realized the link was legit - I've been really happy with my Hori Gamepad so far (LOVE the d-pad) but I get this feeling that the Gamevice form factor with a Mini is going to be the closest anyone gets to the WiiU GamePad in terms of comfort.

Might as well take the opportunity to upgrade to a iPad Mini 4 with a bigger HD anyway whenever it comes out, since my current iPad is pretty much full to bursting; that one goes into my case (this killer Castelo Davarg leather case I kickstarted), paired with the Hori, and taken with me when I get called away on business travel. I'll keep the old one around for home use in the Gamevice (which will be particularly nice since GBA4iOS supports Dropbox syncing). Living in the future is pretty cool sometimes.
